Issue 25: November 2016 MOTOR DESIGN LIMITED

MDL Motor Design Training Course, 15th – 18th November 2016, Oswestry, UK

This generic training course was delivered by a number of staff from MDL. Each day had a different focus and was attended by 15 people from international locations. Heide Lewis, our sales associate in the USA attended.

Successful MDL Lecture Tour to USA

Dougie Hawkins (Head of Software Development) and Sarah Woodrow (Applications Engineer) gave guest seminars at two Universities during November. The session at Illinois Institute of Technology was on Thermal Analysis of Machines and the session at University of Wisconsin was on Exploring Current Challenges and Practical Solutions for Electric Machine Drive Systems. Attendance from students was excellent and they engaged in lively debate.

IET Seminar on Practical Control of Salient PM Motors

The IET seminar on Practical Control of Salient PM Motors was organised in Birmingham on 16 November 2016. Almost 80 industry researchers and academics attended the event.

The seminar focused on identifying and demonstrating some of the challenges for motor and drive designers.

Motor Design Ltd. was represented by Dr. James Goss and Dr. Mircea Popescu with a presentation titled: IPM Motor Control from a Motor Design Perspective. This presentation looked at the design of IPM motors and the way in which motor designers model control. Various models of the IPM machines were demonstrated with detailed discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of each approach.

IEEE IAS Chapter Prominent Lecture on Practical Aspects in the Design & Analysis of Electric Machinery for Power Traction Application

A Prominent Lecture event was organised at McGill University, on 23 November 2016, by IEEE IAS Chapter. Dr. Mircea Popescu, gave a presentation titled: Practical Aspects in the Design & Analysis of Electric Machinery for Power Traction Application.

The event was attended by 45 academics and researchers.

The lecture covered the latest developments in the subject from an industry perspective and included timely topics such as heating and ventilation, the torque ripple due to eccentricity, manufacturing technologies like segmented stators for brushless PM machines, die-cast copper rotors for induction motors and the role of computer aided engineering in the industrial environment. State of the art topologies and the emerging trends were also presented.

Giuseppe Volpe - PhD Presentation, University of Cassino, Italy

MDL supports Giuseppe Volpe in his PhD studies at the University of Cassino, Italy. His report on training and research activities 2015/16 took place at the University on 9 November 2016. The commission was enthusiastic about his work and the discussion and debate afterwards was positive and supportive.
